THE MANDALA & MEDITATION WITH THE FIVE SENSES
Sunday 14th January 2024
with Julia Lawless
The mandala (or kyil khor) of Tibetan Buddhism, is traditionally based on a five-fold symbolic symmetry representing our inner dimension: our energetic or emotional state of being. The five elements of earth, water, fire, air and space are directly associated with our five main emotions of pride, anger, desire, envy and ignorance. According to Tantra, all these emotions in their purified forms are nothing other than expressions our innate Buddha nature – the five wisdoms – and a manifestation of our own mind scape.
Focussing on our five senses as meditation tools, provides us with a direct connection between our mind and our everyday sensory environment. The tantric view embraces the richness and vividness of all phenomena, and this can help us to integrate and utilise all our daily life experiences on the path of awakening.
